Planting & care
- Growth habit
- Clumping rosette of arching strap-like leaves; sends out long wiry stolons (runners) tipped with plantlets; forms a dense fountain-shaped mound over time
- Typical bloom
- May–Sep
- Cold hardy to
- Zones 9–10
- Soil
- Adaptable; prefers a light, well-drained potting mix. Tolerates a wide pH range. Fleshy tuberous roots resent soggy soil — good drainage prevents rot
Where to plant
Bright, indirect light or part shade. Keep out of direct summer sun, which scorches the leaves. Any good, well-drained potting mix works.
Watering
Keep lightly moist while growing; let the top inch dry between waterings. If leaf tips brown, switch to rainwater or distilled water and flush the pot occasionally — tap water minerals are the usual cause.
Temperature
Happiest 60–80°F. Not frost hardy — bring indoors before the first freeze.
About Spider Plant
Spider Plant is the friendliest houseplant there is — fast-growing, forgiving, and safe around cats and dogs. Its arching green-and-cream leaves spill over the pot in a cheerful fountain, and before long it sends out little dangling "spiderettes" that make it as fun to watch as it is easy to grow.
It thrives in bright indirect light, shrugs off the occasional missed watering, and is a well-documented air-purifying plant to boot. Snip off a rooted plantlet and pot it up for an instant new plant to share.
Whether it's a starter plant for a first-time grower, a full hanging basket for a shady porch, or an easy-care gift, Spider Plant delivers charm with almost no effort.
